Wow, what amazing memories. I would not really like to go back to those times...a TON of work. But it's still a lovely memory to have of your time with your Grandma.

Remember back in 2000, how we had that energy crisis (thanks, Enron!)? We took to line drying our clothes to save energy. I didn't like the bristly feel of the towels, so I'd freshen them later in the dryer, figuring that it took far LESS energy to fluff them than it did to actually dry them.

Love this story so much Marianne. I have similar memories of my little Grammy in SF. She pulled her machine into her kitchen every Saturday and I watched her push and pull the clothes through the wringer. Then she hung the clothes on a line that ran from her bedroom window all the way across the yard to a high wooden pole on the other side. Her pink "bloomers" flew like little flags in the wind alongside sheets, pillowcases, towels, etc. thanks for your memories I loved them.

I really wish I could find one of the coke bottle stoppers for sprinking clothes before ironing!

I remember having to run outside and gather all the clothes before a thunderstorm and in the winter bringing in clothes that were frozen stiff. I actually LOVE my dryer so that I don't end up with damp clothes scattered all over the house.

But I do love to iron. And I go through spray starch like nobody's business. I should try getting some old-fashioned starch because the spray stuff just doesn't do the job.

Of all the household tasks that you learn to do as a child I actually enjoy ironing and washing dishes. But you'll just have to live with the dust because that was my most hated chore.

I can still remember how the clothes smelled when we brought them into the house. Thanks for bringing back such a good memory.

I have similar memories with my "Nanny," who was my grandma. Ironing is actually quite relaxing, isn't it? I completely relate to the wonderful smells of laundry from the clothesline. Remember the lines that ran through the squeaky wheels that were usually attached to the sides of the house or to other structures on the home property, such as posts? Funny! Beautifully written!

Your memories of wash day are so much like mine. What DID happen to those sprinkle bottle caps? I give my wife lessons in ironing, but they don't seem to stick - she likes to see me pressing a shirt just for her too much.

Oh yes, this brings back lovely memories of my Grandma too. She started ironing early in the morning to have most of it done before the heat of the day. That's where I learned to iron too. Thanks for this pleasant moment.
