While uploading my photos from our end of summer adventures the past couple of days, I had to stop and think how easy it is to be three. You don't care if your bikini fits or even if you're picking your nose with one hand while exhibiting your beautiful shell with the other.
The weather has been pretty warm so I've had a couple of very wonderful days of water play with the children in my life. On Tuesday we celebrated Satchel's last day of summer vacation by taking the ferry to Angel Island for a picnic. Even though the San Francisco fog hung low, the heat on the Island baked.
And then yesterday my little guy and I met my dear friend Jane and her son at Miwok Creek for more water play! It was so great catching up with Jane and just being in the presence of her wisdom. There was this cranky bespectacled woman who complained about the children disturbing the creek. Going on and on about if they were allowed to disrupt the life therein, it would all be extinct before we knew it. Jane was great holding her own...that for the children to grow to respect our earth, first they must have the chance to experience it and fall in love with it. All the while being taught how to tread respectfully. These adventures, when little boys (and girls) wade knee to belly deep with fishing net and kitchen bowl in hand is exactly what they will remember, fondly and with love, that will inspire them to respect as they grow into adults.
Just look at this awe and wonder.
Note: All the minnows and crawdads that swam happily in our little kitchen bowl were freed to continue on happily up creek. I promise.
Very, very nicely done!
