Yesterday was an absolute fiasco. My first day back to work and it went something like this:
17 text messages
37 phone calls
I kid you not. I just counted all the in and out messages/calls on my phone regarding Mom. And there were another 4-5 on my work landline. The problem was it was the first business day since my Mom's discharge and we were tryting to get OT there to settle the bed problem and advise on safest way to use shower, the home care nurse to perscribe something for her constipation, and while all this was going on her caregiver left for an appointment of her own.
I knew she had this appointment, but I was very clear that her relief person, Tima, needed to be there. While I wondered why she didn't realize the importance of this first business day in settling Mom in and why she scheduled a non-urgent appointment for that day, I know that she has a life to live too and I was understanding and suppotive of this. So somehow the family got wrangled into staying and both caregivers went off together! Not. OK. Even if Mom told them to go ahead because her family was there it wasn't OK. And I thought...no, I know...that I was very clear about that. Depending upon this I even scheduled a 1:30 appointment for the Occupational Therapist to visit so that we could get Mom's new bed ASAP, which is our current paramount concern. I mean, you saw, we are surounding her non-working bed with wooden chairs for safety. Luckily, I had spent 40 minutes on the phone with the OT in the morning and Mike (my ex-husband) was there when she arrived.
And then after completing my workday at 8:30 pm, I am searching the pharmacy for Colace and Meralax. Tokasa voiced her concern to me that Mom might be getting constipated, so I asked her to take care of this in the day by calling the phone number the home health nurse left with us on Sunday, to be reminded of what was to be done in the case of constipation (which is common in someone who takes the level of pain meds Mom takes). She did call her, and then left a message for her to call ME back to deal with it from there. I'm at work. She's the caregiver. Those were four of the calls I had today.
We need to have a talk.
All that said, this was last night's email message from Tokasa:
Hi Marianne, able to connect now!! Thanks for the photos, they're beautiful and will definitely send these to Fiji. Meanwhile everyone has gone to bed, Jery watching her favorite TV program. Good night.
